Clay Workshops

Clay/Tile Workshop Series

Susan Bostwick and I have joined our talents to bring you an ever growing series of workshops centered around the creation of clay tiles. We are so excited about the wealth of possibility in that tiny blank clay canvas. Come explore, laugh, and create with us!

Explore Susan’s work here.

Texture
May 10th 6-9pm

wpid-glazed-tiles.jpg.jpegClay responds to the slightest touch; a subtle pinch or delicate lace being rolled into the surface.  (Of course you can also pound or stomp the clay with amazing results.)  Explore texture, composition and inlaid slip – ‘Mishima’ to create your first plates in our Tapas series. For returning students, we will work with templates to create cups and mugs.

Masking
June 14th 6-9pm

image011Bold graphics or subtle layers can be achieved through masking. In this session we will work with bisque-fired Raku clay and colored slips to create distinct small plates.

You will have the option to Raku fire your pieces during the July 9th workshop or we will fire your pieces with clear glaze in an electric kiln / oxidation atmosphere.

Raku Firing Workshop

Description:

Raku Firing
July 9th 10am-2pm (tentative time)

image016Raku often reflects the beauty of simplicity and contrast. Join us and our Raku Guru James Howe for a fun day full of smoke, flame, and instant gratification. We will do back to back firings guaranteed to make you ooh and ahh. Pieces are rapidly heated to 1900º F, reduced, and rapidly cooled in a matter of minutes. You'll see bold crackle patterns, rainbow lusters, and deep carbon black. You will take your pieces home that day. In case of inclement weather, we will fire on July 16th.
